Preventive Maintenance Checklist for Self-Loading Concrete Mixers

In the construction industry, machine downtime is expensive. A stalled concrete mixer can delay crew shifts, lead to concrete curing in transit, and result in substantial financial losses. To ensure maximum reliability on-site, implementing a strict preventive maintenance protocol is essential.

1. The Daily Washing Protocol (Non-Negotiable)

The most common cause of self-loading mixer breakdown is concrete buildup inside the mixing drum. Concrete must never be allowed to cure inside the drum blades. At the end of every shift, or if the mixer is idling for more than 40 minutes, the drum must be flushed with clean water. We recommend adding gravel with water and rotating the drum for 10 minutes to scour off residual cement paste.

2. Lubrication of Rotation Gears and Shovel Hinges

Self-loading mixers operate in high-dust environments. Dust mixes with oil to form an abrasive paste that wears down bearings and gear rings. Daily lubrication of the main drum ring gear, loader shovel hinge pins, and water pump drive shaft is required to prevent friction wear.

3. Electronic Weighing Sensor Calibration

The built-in electronic weighing system is what makes Ajax Fiori mixers so valuable, ensuring consistent concrete grade designs (M20, M25, etc.). However, continuous shovel impact can cause sensor drift. Inspect and clean load cells daily to prevent mud packing around the sensors, and calibrate the weighing terminal weekly.

4. Hydraulic Oil and Filter Checks

Since the drum rotation and loading shovel are hydraulically driven, hydraulic oil quality is critical. Monitor oil levels daily and inspect hoses for leaks or fraying. Change hydraulic filters after every 250 hours of operation to remove micro-metal particles.
